Make new friends in Edinburgh

So you've just moved to Edinburgh? Perhaps you're indulging your fetish for arctic conditions, or more likely your place of work has sectioned you here for reasons best kept private. Whatever your inclination, Itchy is here to point you in the direction of an active, and hopefully deeply rewarding, social life.

The Grange Club offers the neat package of hockey, tennis, squash and cricket for those who have wisely persisted in their sporting endeavours. What better way to debut socially than to educate the Scotch on how cricket is supposed to be played? Besides, Edinburgh denizens of the sexy variety usually congregate in sporting circles, so if romantic liaisons must be pursued, this is an appropriate place to begin.

Not as direct, however, as the rapidly maturing speed-dating phenomenon. Kasbah hosts such gatherings on a semi-regular basis, and, if your chat is sufficiently charismatic and the genital herpes have cleared up, perhaps you'll find someone to watch that Bowling for Columbine DVD with.

Happily, social clubs in the 21st century are no longer a preserve of elites; for the highly caffeinated there's the professionally-orientated Sunday Brunch Club, where the highly paid can escape the stress of a six figure salary by hobnobbing with like-minded types over more than just brunch. Go-Karting, rollerblading or a good old-fashioned drinkathon await the suitably attired.

God is at his happiest when his children are at play, according to something written somewhere in the Bible. Logic dictates, then, that God becomes elated at the sight of his creations bonding over tea, biscuits and a conversation about his own celestial self. Edinburgh has a huge variety of religious centres, of which St.Giles Cathedral is the most architecturally impressive and Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart the most active in the local community.

If all else fails, The Meadows hosts an enormous number of events throughout the year, and in the summer month draws an impressive number of good-natured revellers receptive to conversation and beverages.
