Famous Five adventures in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a sophisticated, cosmopolitan urban centre. Nevertheless the nooks and crannies of this city do offer a few pursuits from a more golden age, when men were men, women were women and the bad guy was always the one with the funny foreign accent.

Arthur's Seat and Salisbury Crags offers the most immediate indication of some adventure to be had, the peak and cliffs rearing up over the city add a sense of wonder that even the most jaded and urbane city dweller can't help but share.

If you're looking to warm up for some escapades with an ice cold ginger beer then the Botanic Gardens offers both outdoor splendour and the weird flora necessary to secrete oneself away from the prying eyes of grownups. And if your dog happens to eat the picnic provisions, there's sure to be a cream bun on offer at either of the two tea-houses.

Once full enough to go off in pursuit of some pesky smugglers it's a short scamper to the Waters of Leith, a sure fire path to some dingy hideout, though you might have to settle for an old-fashioned pub of scowling octogenarians rather than an extensive cave network.

Nearer the centre of town, Monster Mash does a pretty good job of taking you back to a more wholesome age with bangers and mash, scrumptious milkshakes and a whole range of British classics. All this amidst a 50s decor of comic books and tablecloths you can see your face in.

To really escape the modern age, the best bet is to take a short train journey from Waverley Station to North Berwick for that classic sea-side experience of rolling beaches, jutting rocks, abandoned castles, sweet shops and ice cream, and not a wine bar in sight.
