Touching up your masculinity

There was a time, not so long ago, where men were MEN. God knows what this actually means, but apparently things like crying, ironing, childcare, caring about appearances and heaven forbid – wearing makeup were strictly out of the question.

The Mrs (the name of most women when men were MEN) would care, clothe, cook and clean for all those around her while the man supplied a healthy dose of discipline, put the bread on the table, wired plugs and changed tyres.

This gender divide, which is now as blurred as the application of guyliner on a heavy lads night out, has been the heat of much discussion with Brylcreem... good ol' friend to the modern man.

Their 'Mandom' report, which surveyed 2000 modern men, showed some distinct changes – not only in appearance, but attitude and abilities.

male makeup

In the 1920s – 1940s:

90% of men could change a fuse, (today 71%)
80% could put up a shelf (today 58%)
76% could change a tyre (today 44%)

31% were comfortable with housework (today 78%)
25% were comfortable with ironing (today 62%)
27% were comfortable with cooking (today 73%)

65% felt masculine, like a MAN (today 39%)
60% were unconcerned about their appearance (today 56% believe it to be a top priority)

The average man had 2 pairs of shoes (today the average is 5 with 10% having more than 10 pairs)

2% had an all-female friend base (today 13%, with 42% having an equal number of male and female friend)

53% were likely to admit shedding a tear (today 85%)

The least likely to admit cryingwere from:
Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff

The most likely to admit shedding a tear:
Plymouth, Manchester, Belfast

So, lets welcome in the modern man. More in touch with his emotions, less able to do handyman tasks and more likely to have a good ol' bash at the ironing.
