October events in Edinburgh

Those Romans must have severely ballsed something up when putting that calendar together, because we refuse to believe that it's already almost October. Then again, we're sure even Itchy would make the occasional mistake too if we had human blood sports and orgies to distract us. Not to worry – the next month in Edinburgh looks set to offer plenty to keep our minds off vomitoriums and crucifixion.

We suspect much of your hard-earned cash might be spilling into the hands of gig promoters this month as an unexpectedly brilliant lineup hits the stage, starting with Bonobo bringing his slinky brand of funky triphop to the Caves (3rd Oct) .The Liquid Room hosts mental Brazilians, CSS (12th Oct) and Roots Manuva (8th Oct) , as he shows us exactly how 'the cruffatin liveth'... whatever that may involve. Finally, everything gets very dramatic, very quiet, then very loud with Mogwai (Corn Exchange, 21st Oct) , before Seasick Steve mixes blues with homelessness at the Queens Hall (25th Oct).

On the funny side of things, Edinburgh grapples with a Mock The Week tag team, as the misleadingly innocent-looking Russell Howard (5th Oct, King's Theatre) and the truly vicious Frankie Boyle (3rd & 4th Oct, Festival Theatre) hit the capital where it hurts.

If you've ever wished you were able to sit through a whole ballet, Stephen Petronio's Ride The Beast, with its Radiohead soundtrack, is your best bet at the Scottish Ballet Autumn Season (25-27th Sep, Festival Theatre). Still not convinced? Pack it all in and head to the Playhouse for a spoonful of saccharine with the stage adaptation of Mary Poppins (2nd Oct until Dec).

A million miles from the tacky, kilts-and-tablet representations of the 'real' Scotland that spew from Royal Mile tourist shops is the City Art Centre's Treasured Places exhibition (25th Oct until Jan). Accompanied by a collection of paintings entitled A Time and Place, it displays 100 years' worth of art celebrating some of the most cherished places in the country. A nice, neat package of nostalgia, national pride and culture. Choke on it, Mel Gibson.
