Edinburgh

National Gallery of Scotland

Squatting at the foot of the mound, the NGS is a tranquil gem in the bleating heart of Edinburgh's shopping trawl. Inside, elderly men with tartan trousers usher you towards a wide selection of major artworks from early Renaissance to late Impressionism. Justly renowned for its razor–sharp acquisitions, this gallery boasts works by Botticelli and Titian through to Gauguin and Monet, all in the cosy and airless atmosphere of an uncle's living room. Highlights include the extensive selection of Scottish art through the ages – sadly confined to the basement – and the annual display of Turner's breathtaking watercolour sketches. Touring exhibitions lean towards the granny brigade, but the permanent exhibition is impressive enough to warrant elbowing your way through the blue–rinsed sea. Simply mutter 'wonderful, marvellous', and take in the old–style Edinburgh elegance. No cafe, so bring your own scones
