Stills Gallery
Despite its initial impression as yet another vacuously fashionable contemporary art gallery, Stills does cast its net wider than some of its neighbouring galleries with the exhibitions. The emphasis is usually on contemporary photography, but a recent exhibition of Weegee's 1950s New York photographs mark Stills out as a name to watch for inventive programming. Video work, and even paintings – occasionally – turn up, and are almost always contemporary. Cafe Odile upstairs is cool, quiet and very friendly with a great selection of light snacks. Unlike the Collective Gallery opposite, Stills seems to have a genuinely exciting and refreshing approach to contemporary exhibitions. Highly recommended, especially for its collection of kitschy postcards. The perfect antidote to the grandeur of the National Galleries
