La Lanterna Ristorante

Right in the centre of Edinburgh's pub–land, La Lanterna Ristorante is the ideal place to refuel after a Friday after–work booze–up. You'll be surrounded by other drunks at the weekend, but during the week it has a cosy, family–run atmosphere. The interior's a bit tatty, but the waiters are friendly – it helps if you're blonde and female – and it's one of the best places in the city for proper Italian home cooking. Desserts are a bit disappointing –the usual stodgy tiramisu and frozen chocolate gateaux –but the delicious starters and main courses can almost make you believe you're in sun–soaked southern Italy. Great prices too.
