The Pear Tree
Lurking in the shadows of Edinburgh's ugliest building, Appleton Tower, The Pear Tree is a favourite haunt of Edinburgh University students, and is accordingly packed with them. Housed in a building dating back to 1749, The Peartree has plenty of old-world charm with its oak-panelled walls and dim lighting. Happily, this doesn't extend to the clientele; the booze-fiends here provide a vibrant atmosphere. In the summer, and even in the winter, the massive beer garden is a great place to enjoy a pint of real ale away from the crowded interior.
